Was it really necessary to use the word retard? I’m giving you the
benefit of the doubt here but certainly you know that the word
retard used as slang is extremely hurtful to people living with
special needs. Before I had a child with a disability, I pretty much
was like you. I don’t know if I used the word but I certainly didn’t
flinch when I heard it. What’s the big deal, right? It is a huge
deal to people who have cognitive challenges. They get what you are
saying and they understand that you are mocking them, even if it’s
unintentional.

Oh, great, another lecture on the use of the common place slang-slam-cut term “retard”. I have had, for the past 55 years, a Mentally Retarded sister. She doesn’t know the word “retard” or for that matter “retarded”. She also doesn’t have responsibilities like paying taxes, having to exercise patience for “normal” people’s goofy behavior or wondering why she has physiologic problems. And I dare say I have yet to see one non-mentally retarded person call her or others like her to be offended if some slack-jawed loser calls her or them “retard”. 99.9% of the non-retarded society doesn’t yell at or bother them- usually quite the opposite, if they aren’t put off initially. “Retard” in the context of this site name or title is a reference to lame where lame shouldn’t exist, things being f’d up where they shouldn’t be. It’s use is as a variation on stupidity- not as anything to do with a group of society called “the mentally retarded” or “mentally challenged”. A good example would be the now ex-President’s public speech persona- he always came off as a retard as opposed to my sister who wouldn’t even think of ladling such BS, preferring to laugh and enjoy her life. She would never act like the retards this site pokes fun at. She’s too silly to behave so stupidly. BP
